Porsche aims to repeat last year’s victory at Florida’s sports car classic

Stuttgart. The Sebring 12 Hours is the oldest and toughest sports car race in the USA. Three Porsche 911 RSR will tackle the GTLM class at the 63rd running of the prestigious classic contested on the Sebring International Raceway on 21 March.

For the Porsche North America works team and the Falken Tire customer squad, eight works drivers will do their utmost to repeat Porsche’s win from last year on the airfield circuit in the heart of Florida, which is notorious for its bumpy surface. With 18 overall victories and 67 class wins, Porsche is the most successful manufacturer in the history of the Sebring 12 hour race.

The race
The Sebring International Raceway hosted the inaugural race on 31 December 1950. Built on a former airfield, the circuit with its 17 corners is 5.954 kilometres long. Immortalised on the winners’ list are racing legends like Juan Manuel Fangio, Dan Gurney, Hans Hermann, Jacky Ickx and Mario Andretti. Hollywood stars Paul Newman and Steve McQueen, who finished second overall in 1970 with a Porsche 908, have also fulfilled their racing dreams in Sebring.

Six Porsche factory pilots compete for Porsche North America in Sebring. Sharing the cockpit of the #911 Porsche 911 RSR are Patrick Pilet (France), Richard Lietz (Austria) and Nick Tandy (Great Britain).

Last year’s winners Jörg Bergmeister (Germany) as well as Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and Frédéric Makowiecki (France) share driving duties in the number 912 vehicle.

Tackling the race for the Falken Tire customer outfit are the Porsche works drivers Wolf Henzler (Germany) and Patrick Long (USA), reinforced by Bryan Sellers (USA). Porsche Junior Connor de Phillippi (USA) contests the GTD class at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT America fielded by Muehlner Motorsports.

The Porsche vehicles
The Porsche 911 RSR and the Porsche 911 GT America, which are run in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship, are based on the seventh generation of the iconic 911 sports car. As the successor to the winning 911 GT3 RSR, the 470 hp 911 RSR last season scored victories at America’s most prestigious long-distance classics in Daytona, Sebring and Petit Le Mans. For 2015, the winning racer from Weissach has received improvements in many areas.

The Porsche 911 GT America, built specifically for the GTD class of the 2014-inaugurated Tudor United SportsCar Championship, features a four-litre, six-cylinder engine and also produces 470 hp. The vehicle is an improved version of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, the most successful and widely-produced race car in the world.

Porsche’s successes
The first outright victory for Porsche in Sebring came in 1960 courtesy of Hans Herrmann and Olivier Gendebien in the Porsche 718 RS/60; the most recent in 2008 was clinched by Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Emmanuel Collard with the Porsche RS Spyder. Porsche’s list of successes also includes no less than 67 class wins at this race. The most recent success was last year with Jörg Bergmeister, Michael Christensen and Patrick Long at the wheel of the Porsche 911 RSR.

The schedule
The 12 Hours of Sebring takes off on Saturday, 21 March, at 10.45 hrs local time (16.45 hrs CET) and can be viewed live in the Internet on www.imsa.com as well as on the motorsport channel Motors TV.

This is the Tudor United SportsCar Championship
The Tudor United SportsCar Championship is a new sports car race series contested in the USA and Canada which was run in 2014 for the first time.

The series was formed from the merger of the American Le Mans Series and the Grand-Am Series. Sports prototypes and sports cars start in four different classes: GTLM (GT Le Mans), GTD (GT Daytona), P (Prototype) and PC (Prototype Challenge). The Porsche 911 RSR runs in the GTLM class, with the Porsche 911 GT America contesting the GTD class.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS: the race car for the circuit racetrack and everyday driving

Stuttgart. In the new 911 GT3 RS, Porsche is once again breaking down the barrier between sports cars and race cars. It is equipped with the maximum degree of motorsport technology that is currently possible in a street-legal 911 that is suitable for everyday driving.

Extensive modifications to its drive system, aerodynamics and lightweight design enhance performance even more than in the 911 GT3. With a lap time of seven minutes and 20 seconds, the new 911 GT3 RS even beats the historic record value of the Carrera GT super sports car of just under seven minutes and 29 seconds on the North Loop of the Nürburgring.

This once again qualifies the high-performance sports car as the benchmark in its class – directly at its launch. The 911 GT3 RS is celebrating its world premiere at the 2015 Geneva International Motor Show.

Motorsport expertise is the reason for this superior performance. The 911 GT3 RS is powered by a four-litre six-cylinder engine with 500 hp (368 kW) of power and 460 Newton metres of torque, combined with a specially developed PDK transmission.

911 GT3 RS

The engine, which has the largest displacement and most power of any naturally aspirated engine with direct fuel injection in the 911 family, accelerates the high-performance sports car from zero to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and to 200 km/h in 10.9 seconds. Its combined NEDC fuel consumption is 12.7 l/100 km.

911 GT3 RS

Functions such as de-clutching by “paddle neutral” – which is comparable to pressing the clutch with a conventional manual gearbox – and speed limiting by the Pit Speed button have been customised for motorsport use. They give drivers more freedom in terms of driving dynamics, while also providing them with more assistance when driving on a circuit racetrack.

911 GT3 RS

The 911 GT3 RS is a masterpiece of intelligent lightweight design. For the first time, the roof is made of magnesium; carbon fibre is used for the engine and luggage compartment lids, and other lightweight components are made of alternative materials.

This makes the RS model around ten kilograms lighter than the 911 GT3. In addition, the lightweight roof lowers the sports car’s centre of gravity which improves its excellent lateral dynamics. The body comes from the 911 Turbo, and it signifies its status as nearly a race car driving machine with its RS-specific aerodynamic add-on parts. The front spoiler lip, which extends nearly to the road, and the large rear wing reinforce its dominant look.

911 GT3 RS

A 30 centimetre wide recess extends centrally over the CRFP bonnet and the magnesium roof. This feature is a stylistic reference to the recess on the luggage compartment lid of the classic 911 models with air-cooled engines, and today it identifies the two largest lightweight components in the 911 GT3 RS. Another characteristic is the unique front wheel arch air vents that extend into the upper section of the wings – just as in purebred motorsport cars. They increase downforce at the front axle.

The chassis of the 911 GT3 RS has been tuned for maximum driving dynamics and precision. Rear-axle steering and Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus with fully variable rear axle differential lock increase agility and dynamics, and the wider front and rear track widths enable even better roll stability than in the 911 GT3. In addition, the 911 GT3 RS comes with the widest tyres of any 911 model as standard. The results: even more agile turn-in characteristics and even higher cornering speeds.

The interior design of the 911 GT3 RS with Alcantara elements is based on the current 911 GT3. One key new feature is the full bucket seats, which are based on the carbon bucket seats of the 918 Spyder. Other standard features are the Club Sport Package with a bolted-on roll cage behind the front seats, preparation for a battery master switch, and separately provided six-point safety harness for the driver and fire extinguisher with mounting bracket. The optional Sport Chrono Package, which features – in addition to its integrated timers – the Porsche Track Precision app for a smartphone.

The Track Precision app can be used to have lap times automatically measured via GPS, and to log data on a smartphone for many driving parameters such as vehicle speed, lateral acceleration as well as acceleration and deceleration in the driving direction. It manages this data and lets the driver share and compare it with other drivers.

The 911 GT3 RS can be ordered now, and it will launch on the German market starting in May 2015. In Germany, its price is 181,690 euros including VAT and country-specific equipment.

New Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System

The purpose-built unit combines the style of yesteryear with the benefits of modern technology. It fits perfectly into the DIN-1 slot that has been used in the sports cars for decades and is operated by means of two knobs, six discreetly integrated buttons and a touch-sensitive 3.5-inch display.

Classic on the outside yet ultra modern on the inside: the Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System.

It is suitable for all classic Porsche cars with a DIN-1 slot. From the 911 F-model, to the 911 type 993, and for both four and eight-cylinder vehicles (excluding the Porsche 356).
This short video clip points out the most important USPs: Map-Navigation, phone calls via bluetooth, the use of the USB port and perfect fitting into the dashboard.

Thanks to the appearance of the black surface and the shape of the knobs, which are supplied in two authentically styled versions as standard, the navigation radio blends harmoniously into the dashboard of classic Porsche models. It bears the Porsche lettering and is suitable for the sports car generations between the first 911 from the 1960s and the last of the 911 series with air cooling from the mid 1990s (993 series), including the earlier front-engine and mid-engine models.

The new navigation radio comes with all the key features of today’s systems. In addition to low-interference radio reception and precise navigation, it has interfaces for a variety of external music sources that can be controlled from the display. A smartphone can be connected via Bluetooth. In addition, the classic radio not only has a built-in microphone but also comes with an external microphone. The integrated amplifier delivers 4×45 watts and can be connected either directly to the loudspeakers or to the original sound system using an optional adapter cable.

The new navigation radio has been exclusively developed for Porsche Classic and specially for the classic sports cars. Radio reception, for instance, has been optimised for the built-in aerial supplied ex-works, which is generally only a single telescope. The operating concept of the device is based on Porsche Communication Management (PCM) and has undergone extensive testing at the Technical University in Munich to verify its user friendliness.

Numerous trial journeys have been undertaken in Europe to test the country-specific navigation. Drivers have a choice of arrows and two-dimensional or three-dimensional maps to display the route. The maps are stored on a microSD card with eight gigabytes of memory and are updated regularly. In Germany, the new navigation radio is available immediately from Porsche Classic Partners or Centres and costs 1,184 euros including VAT.

Received this book in the mail this week from Pen & Sword Military books in the U.K., compliments of the author Karl Ludvigsen. I am so excited to get into reading it thoroughly. Have to read the book before making any conclusions or review. However, from reading the first chapter last night about the young automotive engineer and founder of the Porsche car company, so far sounds very interesting and well documented about him creating the first gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle (Lohner-Porsche).  There will be more to review later on. Definitely an in-depth and richly illustrated account of Ferdinand Porsche‘s little-known career as a military engineer embracing both World Wars. Providing insights into the creative thinking and working methods of one of the greatest automotive engineers.

Karl Ludvigsen is a world-renowned and prize-winning historian and author with over fifty books to his credit. He has made in-depth studies of the cars and histories of Volkswagen, Corvette, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz as well as the careers of leading Grand Prix drivers and designers. A former vice-president of Ford of Europe, Ludvigsen has had a life-long interest in engineering and military history. Among his most notable publications are Porsche: Excellence Was Expected, Battle for the Beetle and Colin Chapman: Inside the Innovator.

In addition to his motor industry activities as an executive (with GM, Fiat and Ford) and head of a consulting company, Karl Ludvigsen has been active for over 50 years as an author and historian. As an author, co-author or editor he has some four dozen books to his credit. Needless to say, they are all about cars and the motor industry, Karl’s life-long passion.

Since 1997 Ludvigsen has been drawing on the photographic resources of the Ludvigsen Library to write and illustrate books on the great racing drivers. His first title in this series was Stirling Moss ‘ Racing with the Maestro. He followed this with Jackie Stewart ‘ Triple-Crowned King of Speed and Juan Manuel Fangio ‘ Motor Racing’s Grand Master. Fourth in this series for Haynes Publishing was Dan Gurney ‘ The Ultimate Racer and fifth was Alberto Ascari ‘ Ferrari’s First Double Champion. Next came Bruce McLaren ‘ Life and Legend of Excellence and Emerson Fittipaldi ‘ Heart of a Racer.

Also in the field of motor sports Karl Ludvigsen has written about road racing in America, the cars of the Can-Am series, the AAR Eagle racing cars, the GT40 Fords and Prime Movers, the story of Britain’s Ilmor Engineering. His introduction to At Speed, a book of Jesse Alexander’s racing photography, won the Ken W. Purdy Award for Excellence in Automotive Journalism. Other motors-sports titles include Classic Grand Prix Cars, a history of the front-engined G.P. racer, and Classic Racing Engines, Karl’s personal selection of 50 notable power units.

Four of Karl Ludvigsen’s books concern the Chevrolet Corvette, one of them an industry best-seller. He has written three times about Mercedes-Benz, twice about its racing cars. His books on the latter subject have won the Montagu Trophy (once) and the Nicholas-Joseph Cugnot Award (twice), both recognising outstanding automotive historical writing. In 2001 he again received the Cugnot award from the Society of Automotive Historians for his book about the early years of the Volkswagen, Battle for the Beetle, a Robert Bentley publication.

Karl Ludvigsen’s Porsche history, Excellence was Expected, is considered by many to be a model of the researching and writing of the history of an auto company. He has updated it twice in a three-volume format for Bentley Publishers for the new Millennium. He is the author of a series of monographs on great Maserati cars. His book BRM V16 for Veloce Publishing tells the story of one of the most controversial racing cars of all time. In The V12 Engine for Haynes he describes the creation and consequences of all the cars ever powered by the iconic vee-twelves.

In 1997 Ludvigsen researched and wrote the catalogue for a special exhibition of Ferrari technological innovations on the occasion of the company’s 50th anniversary and contributed a major section to the company’s official 50-year history. He has updated this for the company’s 60th anniversary. Karl’s understanding of the Ferrari world combined with his Library’s holding of the Rodolfo Mailander photo archive to produce Ferrari by Mailander in 2005, a Dalton Watson publication. In 2006 with Dalton Watson Karl has published The Incredible Blitzen Benz, the story of six great record-breaking cars.

In co-operation with publisher Iconografix, Ludvigsen has established the Ludvigsen Library Series of 128-page books drawing on the holdings of the Ludvigsen Library. The series now numbers 19 titles, including books on Indy racing cars of 1911 to 1939, the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the Indy Novis, Chevrolet’s Corvair and Corvette, the Mercedes-Benz 300SL of 1952 and 1954-1964, the 300SLR of 1955, Porsche Spyders, Porsche 917, Jaguar XK120, XK140 and XK150, Land Rover Defender the Ferrari factory and American sports-racers: the Cunninghams, Chaparrals and Can-Am racing cars. With the theme “The Sound of Porsche: Stories of the Brand” Porsche has created a completely new, interactive brand experience with its first stop in New York City for three weeks. The sports car manufacturer from Stuttgart has opened an exclusive pop-up store in the style of a modern music store in Manhattan’s trendy Meatpacking District and invites visitors to discover Porsche and its fascinating sports cars in various ways. The store opening was celebrated on 15 September 2014 – moderated by fashion icon Angela Simmons and with guests including Porsche works drivers Brendon Hartley and Patrick Long, as well as actor and racing driver Patrick Dempsey, who has been a firm part of the Porsche motorsport family since 2013 with his team Dempsey Racing.

The event space is divided into three areas and comprises a Sound Lab, Media Stations and a Design Corner. The Sound Lab is all about the cult car Porsche 911*. Porsche Announces Date Change for Rennsport Reunion V – Now September 25- 27, 2015

Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca have announced today that the next Porsche Rennsport Reunion will now take place at the famed California racetrack the weekend of September 25 – 27, 2015, two weeks earlier than originally planned.

The date change is due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict with the World Endurance Championship (WEC) racing series.

“We felt it would be in the best interest for all parties to take this unusual step and move the date,” said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. “By moving
Rennsport Reunion V ahead two weeks, we ensure that our current 919 Hybrid LMP1 and 911 RSR race teams, and more importantly, our new generation of racing heroes can join our racing
legends and be part of the festivities among our many fans.”

Hosted by PCNA, Rennsport Reunion V will, once again, bring together an extraordinary gathering of significant Porsche vintage and current racecars, as well those who have designed, engineered, and driven them to victory in the world’s most famous sports car races. The three-day program of on-track competition will be complemented by a Concours d’Elegance, which is open to invited race participants, and special activities celebrating each of the six decades of legendary Porsche racecars.

Rennsport will return to Laguna Seca – Rennsport Reunion V will, once again, bring together an extraordinary gathering of significant Porsche vintage and current racecars, as well those who have designed, engineered and driven them to victory in the world’s most famous sports car races. The three-day program of on-track competition will be complemented by a Concours d’Elegance, which is open to invited race participants, and special activities celebrating each of the six decades of legendary Porsche racecars.

This incomparable event has been held about every three years. After staging the first three rounds in the East, with the inaugural at Lime Rock Park in 2001, Rennsport Reunion IV moved west in 2011, tapping into a vast array of west coast car aficionados and Porsche enthusiasts. “While the Rennsport name from the beginning has become a staple fixture for international collectors and racers, choosing the Monterey Peninsula opened up this one-of-a-kind gathering to the many Porsche fans in California and beyond who were previously unable to attend,” said Detlev von Platen, President and Chief Executive Officer of Porsche Cars North America. “Approximately 40,000 spectators for the weekend, and a record number of race cars and participants, proved that our decision to come here was correct.”

“After that truly rare gathering of significant Porsche racecars on the West Coast in 2011, we can expect an even larger number of fans of the Stuttgart sports car icon to attend next year,” predicted Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. “We are proud that Porsche will come back to our track where it has a long racing tradition, and my team and I look forward to help making this the best Rennsport Reunion ever.”

Porsche Rennsport Reunion V will assemble a wide variety of Porsche’s most historic racing models from the nimble mid-engine 550 Spyder of the mid-Fifties, through the mighty 917 and 956/962 of the Seventies and Eighties, to the highly successful 911 GT3 RSR and RS Spyder of the last decade. Special tribute will be paid to the car that embodies Porsche’s return to the top of sports car racing. The 919 LMP1 Prototype is the guarantee that Porsche motorsports – and Rennsport Reunion – have a successful future.

During Porsche Rennsport Reunion IV, approximately 1,300 Porsche Club of America (PCA) member-owned Porsche models from the past 66 years helped fill the show fields, race classes, and parking lots of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. For the upcoming fifth rendition, the PCA, celebrating its 60th year in 2015, will once again play an integral role, capping their year-long celebration.

Thanks to plug-in hybrid technology the Cayenne S E-Hybrid has a fuel economy of only 3.4 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of a mere 79 grams per kilometre. These are top values overall, especially for an all-wheel-drive car. Market reaction to the models with the advanced drive concept was accordingly positive: In the first eight months of 2014, Porsche delivered a total of 16,698 units of the Panamera of which 1,513 were Panamera S E-Hybrid models – a share of nine per cent. Porsche is also expecting very high sales figures for the Cayenne S E-Hybrid.

These tyre approval lists represent the results of extensive tests over several weeks carried out by the Porsche tyre experts this summer. Porsche tests new tyres for sports cars up to 65 years old
As around two thirds of all Porsche models ever built are still in driving condition, Porsche takes a lot of effort to look after these older models. You can see this from the format that is used for the tyre approval for older models: Currently, there are 183 recommendations, just for the right summer tyres, for those models built between 1949 and 2005. Another 126 recommendations apply to winter tyres.

All these approvals are usually updated every two years through ongoing tests. The reason for all this effort is obvious: As the manufacturer, Porsche cannot abandon owners with regards to the right tyre types, because many owners are still lovingly taking care of and driving their Porsche models that reach back into the fifties and sixties. Independent tyre businesses, if faced with a 1963 Porsche 356 and tyre format 185/70 R 15, would for instance probably use those tyre types that are generally available for the remaining VW Beetle population and the various Transporter models.

However, special tyre approvals for new Porsche models already applied in the past, and these were practically always based on special development steps by the tyre manufacturer and specifically designed for Porsche. Selecting a new set of tyres for a 356 model on the basis of “only size matters” would therefore essentially be a mistake. The beautiful vintage car would not be radically unfit to drive in most cases, but the original skill of such a car for a safe road stance and playful handling would be pretty much left at the road side. Maybe not when dry, but fairly probably when the road was wet. Such incorrect choices are why Porsche has carried out the latest tyre tests.

Oldsters can be dashing too
To avoid dramatic errors, new tyre models are tested and processed for approval for all the older car models. The Porsche Museum and Porsche Classic are always delighted to open up their fleets and send the cars out onto the test track. In this way, robust test drives take place on the test grounds of Contidrom near Hanover using those Porsche models that already have a few decades tucked under their elegantly designed bonnets. Porsche Classic adopts the recommendations of the tyre test specialists who, particularly in the case of Dieter Röscheisen, can look back over a few dozen years of tyre testing experience. He therefore stands on a level playing field with his classic format test cars and is usually just as fast when on the go.

Because tyre testing also means driving at the limit in a controlled manner. The disciplines of dry and wet handling are of paramount interest, while brake testing and aquaplaning tests round off the test program. The entire test program is aimed at precisely measuring how the tyres behave up to the limits. Every facet of behaviour, from the initial steering movement to the exit of the bend, is precisely analysed and logged for each set of tyres in the test. The car turning cleanly into the bend is just the first step towards approval. Well-controlled behaviour under high transverse acceleration is obligatory, and exiting bends must be mastered without any discontinuous loss of road adherence.

A harmonious performance is paramount
The tests always comprise several rounds on the test track, which is rich in curves, and precisely determined lap times are used for comparative purposes. A tyre must deliver performance at its limits in a predictable and balanced manner to obtain a good evaluation. The same applies understandably to the front and rear axles as this is only way to get good marks and the prospect of approval for the historic vehicle series.

The marking that turns tyres in a historically valuable dimension into Porsche tyres is therefore a type of quality seal: Those tyre models recommended by Porsche bear the mark “N” on the tyre flank, always in combination with a number (N0, N1, N2, etc.). This “N” has for decades been the hallmark for the special tyre designs developed for Porsche. Naturally, it would have been nice at the time to be able to select “P” or “Po” for Porsche. But the international development of the tyre standards led to N being chosen as the unmistakable mark for the selected approval by Porsche and that is how it stands today. The experts all know, the “N” belongs to Porsche when it comes to tyres.

The corresponding number after the “N” is solely used to differentiate the approval series. Example: The first version of a tyre with the dimension 195/65 R 15 was approved with the mark N0 for the applicable Carrera series in the seventies. When a new series of the same tyre, manufacture and type is designed and approved for production as replacement parts, the tyre is assigned the next higher auxiliary number – in this case 1 – to differentiate it from the previous series.

Keyword tyre ageing
This particularly critical aspect was also tested during the latest test series in summer 2014. This effect mainly plays a role when a vehicle with a long history is only rarely driven and spends more time standing than driving. The tyres visibly become more brittle, the traction and level of grip decrease. The word “undriveable” may not apply directly if such a tyre is just over five years old. But the capability for a smooth driving style, which may have characterised it at one point, decreases steadily with increasing age in all cases. If you take a look at the so-called DOT number on the tyre flank, you can quickly determine how old the tyre actually is. The number accompanying the letters DOT is always a four digit number, specifying the production week and year of the tyre, i.e. 1302 for week 13 in year 2002.

During the 2014 test program, tyre-testing expert Dieter Röscheisen evaluated a twelve year old tyre as very critical, particularly regarding wet handling: “The tyre was tested on a 1988 930 Turbo. This twelve year old tyre offers very little traction, particularly when wet, with correspondingly weak braking performance and is therefore extremely tricky to drive, especially in vehicles without ABS, due to the high blocking tendency of the front wheels. It initially steers very sluggishly into curves. This leads to an uncomfortable understeer, which is atypical for the basic setup of the Porsche. At some point during the curve, it usually suddenly develops some traction which in turn makes the rear act uneasily. The driving behaviour of the standard Porsche 930 is really affected by this and requires an expert hand, particularly in the wet, to prevent abrupt breakaways. It is difficult to impossible to drive quickly in a clean line.”

A completely different tone is struck in the test evaluation results regarding a new 185/70 R 15 tyre for the 1963 Porsche 356. The original words on the evaluation sheet: “This set leaves a very good overall impression, even on the 356 with the smallest 5.0 J x 15 rims. A lot of grip is present and the balance is good. Over and understeering tendency is low and the grip breakaway is not too abrupt. This makes the rear a bit more agile overall. One can drive fast and precisely, with a very safe feeling at all times. The tyre offers a high safety reserve and has no particular weak points.”

Just as an aside, this vintage Porsche, a 356 Super 90 model from the museum collection, is probably equipped with slightly better tyres today and drives with more balanced driving characteristics than when it was built 51 years ago in 1963.

Approximately 300 tyres to choose from
The afore-mentioned and other new tyre qualities of tested and approved designs and matches are listed in detail on the Porsche Classic homepage. There are approximately 300 approved summer and winter tyres available for Porsche sports cars built between 1949 and 2005. There maybe five to seven recommendations available for certain models, depending on the rim sizes.
This is because not every new tyre developed and matched with a current model was continued to be manufactured for decades after the period during which it was produced as original equipment. Some types were simply discontinued, others are modified due to new regulations regarding the rubber compound recipes. This is, for instance, the case if specific chemical compounds used in tyre production are changed when more modern components come onto the market offering better grip and, simultaneously, less rolling resistance. The tyre manufacturers cannot let such developments pass them by.

Simply mounting the tyres of subsequent evolutionary stages without testing onto rims of older vehicles has not been successful in practice. There have been cases within the broad field of historic vehicles where the car has become almost uncontrollable when driving at the limits after it had been equipped with unspecified tyres. Really disastrous driving behaviour is not necessarily the immediate result. However, in the majority of cases, significantly unbalanced behaviour during steering and handling resulted. A particularly negative problem is when a tyre performs poorly under wet conditions. Just like all other drivers, the driver of an older Porsche cannot choose the weather on the roads being travelled upon.

This is just one of the reasons why the new developments for older vehicles by the tyre industry are subjected to the Porsche test program. In numerous cases this leads to a cooperation in the further development of specific tyre types, often leading to highly commendable test evaluations for the various tyre types. The “N” mark on the flank unifies them all as tested and approved.

One of the manufacturer’s tasks here is also to maintain a suitable stock: Tyres for models from the sixties and seventies are – due to the lack of demand – no longer manufactured in continuous mass production. Instead, a new series is produced from time to time when required. If suitably stored (cool and dark), the tyres only age slowly and slightly. This ensures that the quality is maintained, even after a few years. Porsche Classic only recommends those tyre types that performed well in the test procedures.

Preventing ageing: Store tyres like good wine
A tyre starts to lose suppleness and grip after about five years. It does not, of course, become abruptly undriveable, but starts to appreciably lose balance over subsequent years. However, the effects of ageing can be slowed down if storage is implemented with care – in a similar manner to good wine: Tyres age less rapidly if stored in the dark at lower temperatures. If you can afford it and have the necessary space to do so, store a fresh set of tyres for your forthcoming pleasure tours in your cool cellar and park your vintage Porsche in the garage on a set of – maybe well worn – “standing tyres”.

If you don’t want to or cannot change the tyres so frequently, you should pay attention to the following tips. Because, if the vehicle stands for too long in one place without greatly increased tyre pressure, so-called “flat spots” occur. It is therefore common practice to raise the air pressure up to the maximum permissible pressure for the rims, which is usually 4.5 bar, when storing cars. So-called tyre shoes or tyre pillows, obtainable from accessory dealers, are also useful in this case. These are concave supports made of rubber, plastic or wood placed under the wheels so that the car is parked with all four wheels in the hollows. The concave form distributes the tyre contact area over a significantly larger area and prevents the tyre from becoming square during the standing time due to flat spots.

Porsche therefore ensures, through their regular tyre tests for Porsche classic cars and modern classics, that driving pleasure and driving safety are not diminished, even in older models.

Stuttgart. Nicki Thiim (Walter Lechner Racing Team) has clinched the fastest time in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup qualifying session on the Hockenheimring Baden-Württemberg. The Dane outpaced his rivals at the wheel of his 460 hp Porsche 911 GT3 Cup and relegated Kévin Estre (F/Mc Gregor powered by Attempto Racing) and Michael Ammermüller (D/Walter Lechner Racing Team) to the second and third grid positions.

In sweltering summer temperatures fans were treated to a thrilling qualifying session on the storied German race track: the air temperature of 31 degrees Celsius and a track temperature of 51 degrees made this qualifying session the hottest of the season. The best grid spots for the race on Sunday were posted in the final five minutes of the 30-minute session. After topping the time charts for much of the time, the winner of the International Cup Scholarship Earl Bamber (NZ/Fach Auto Tech) was shunted by Thiim from his top spot five minutes before the end of the session with a time of 1:43.251 minutes, followed closely by his former teammate Kévin Estre in 1:43.493 minutes. The reigning Supercup title holder held on to his pole-setting time to the end. In the final seconds, Bavaria’s Michael Ammermüller made a last ditch attempt to knock him off the front grid spot and landed on a commendable third place.

The close results of the following positions are evidence of the tough competition in this international Porsche championship. With their identical 911 GT3 Cup racers, the fastest 17 drivers all posted times within a mere seven-tenths of a second. Porsche junior Sven Mueller(D/Team Project 1) scored the spot behind Bamber in fifth. “At first we were the fastest but on the second set of tyres I encountered some traffic, explained Bamber. “I improved on the stuff I got wrong on Friday,” concluded Mueller, “and now I’m quite pleased with my performance.”

Porsche junior Connor de Phillippi (USA/FÖRCH Racing by Lukas Motorsport) sits in twelfth: “It’s not exactly the result I’d hoped for. The conditions were difficult with lots of yellow flags out during the qualifying.” Porsche junior Alex Riberas (E/Mc Gregor powered by Attempto Racing) was disappointed with his 16th position. “I found the qualifying very tough. At first I was sitting fifth, but then the yellow flag came out while I was on my second set of tyres before I’d finished my lap,” stated the 20-year-old Spaniard.

VIP-driver Patrick Dempsey achieved 26th at his Supercup debut: “I’m really pleased with my qualifying. I tried to brake later each lap and managed to improve considerably on my times from Friday’s free practice. But in such an incredibly strong field it wasn’t enough for a position near the front. I’m very much looking forward to the race. My first standing start at an international race will be a completely new experience for me.”

In Sunday’s race, pole-sitter Nicki Thiim could become the fourth different winner from five races. Bamber won the season-opener in Barcelona, Giermaziak dominated in Monaco and Spielberg, and Clemens Schmid (A/Walter Lechner Racing Team) in Silverstone. A glance at the qualifying results also shows that no one as yet has emerged as a favourite. Philipp Eng (A/Team Project 1) clinched pole position in Barcelona and Spielberg, Giermaziak in Monaco, Schmid in Silverstone and now Thiim in Hockenheim.

A new luggage series for a super sports car, created by the Porsche Design Studio

Stuttgart. The new Porsche 918 Spyder luggage set presented by Porsche Tequipment is the first suitcase and bag series specially designed for trips away in this high-performance Sports Car. Designed by the Porsche Design Studio and developed by Porsche in Weissach, the luggage collection is an ideal match for the interior of the super sports car. The material concept of these luxurious accessories is based on those used in the passenger compartment of the 918 Spyder*, and the set is also designed to make optimum use of the space available in the vehicle.

The series is available in three versions: as a five-piece luggage set, a three-piece travel set or a two-piece stowage set. The entire set comprises two storage boxes, two garment covers and a trolley.

The trolley was specially designed to fit the luggage compartment of the 918 Spyder and has a capacity of 30 litres. Its unusual form means that it leaves more than enough space in the luggage compartment to stow the removable roof halves of the 918 Spyder as well. The trolley can be expanded to hold an additional 10 litres if necessary.

A carbon case for the centre console is also included in the collection. The box opens on the passenger’s side and fits into the elevated centre console, providing stowage space of around 4 litres.

An additional small storage box utilises the space in the glove box for secure stowage. The fact that it is opened and closed using the flap of the glove compartment means that it is ideally integrated into the vehicle.
The luggage set is rounded off by two garment covers which can be securely attached to the carbon-fibre monocoque behind the seats thanks to a specially designed hanging system. The magnetic clasps on the inside of the garment protectors make it easier to fold them together. The protective covers are also shaped to fit the available space, unlike conventional garment covers.

The 918 Spyder luggage series is “Handmade in Germany“. The pieces of luggage are made from a unique high-quality combination of exposed carbon and authentic natural leather. The insides of the boxes, the garment covers and the suitcase are lined with Alcantara. The set thus references the popular motor sports materials which are also used in the interior of the 918 Spyder. The luggage set is available in the same versions as the vehicle interior: Garnet Red-Silver, Onyx Black-Acid Green, Onyx Black-Silver, Mocca Brown-Silver and Mocca Brown-Orange.

Porsche 911 Storm tested: Adaptive Aerodynamics

Air makes things slower. And air makes things faster: Aerodynamics is both a curse and a blessing for sports cars. The keyword here: downforce.

Throughout its 50 years of development, the basic form of the Porsche 911 has been a perfect aerodynamic example of the latter. At the same time, the 911 provides an impressive lesson on how it is possible to continue to aerodynamically refine a car’s basic form without losing key aspects of its distinctive design and brand recognition.

The aerodynamic contour of the Porsche 911 stems from the 1950s and is a legacy of the Porsche 356. In those days, attempts were made to adopt and develop streamlined forms from aviation. The role model for the contour of the original Porsche was a teardrop profile of a cross-section of an aircraft wing. The advantages of this form: It reduces drag, and high driving speeds can be achieved even at low engine output – a basic Porsche principle. This also provided the foundation for success in motor sports. Because Porsche sports cars have also always been designed for motor sports, the brand’s classical testing grounds. Reduced power output means reduced energy consumption. Outstanding efficiency has always been an essential trait of the 911.

However, flow dynamics around the basic form of a 911 are not always advantageous. A basic disadvantage of a sports car with a streamlined chassis is the “lift-off effect” (aerodynamic lift) at the front and rear axles – which is required in aircraft, but not in automobiles. It is especially detrimental, since lift forces increase exponentially with vehicle speed: Doubling vehicle speed quadruples the force of aerodynamic lift. From about 80 km/h, air is the dominating drag force that counters all further acceleration and needs to be overcome with engine power.

The flow dynamics of any given basic form produces both drag and lift forces. In order to reduce their effects, the flow dynamics must be modified in specific ways with the help of aerodynamic add-on parts. A legendary example was provided by Porsche in the early 1970s in the form of the 917 racing car, which was equipped with an extra long chassis for high speed tracks – the famous long-tail racing car with particularly low air drag for Le Mans.

Based on this experience, Porsche equipped the 911 S with the first front spoiler in 1971. It accelerated the air flow underneath the vehicle, diverted some of the air around the sides and therefore reduced aerodynamic lift of the vehicle’s front section. The advantages were improved directional stability and easier controllability. The Carrera RS 2.7, designed for motor sports in 1972, brought a milestone in aerodynamic development to the market: Not only was it equipped with a low-slung front spoiler, but also with a distinctive spoiler over the bonnet – the legendary “ducktail”. Both add-on components improved airflow around the 911 and reduced aerodynamic lift and drag. The result: The Carrera RS 2.7 was particularly fast and efficient, while also offering excellent road-handling characteristics at high speeds. One year later, the prototype of the first 911 Turbo further intensified on-going aerodynamic development of the 911 chassis with a large, fixed rear spoiler.

Porsche has continued to improve the aerodynamics of the 911 and reduce its air drag and lift from generation to generation. Driving performance increased while fuel consumption was reduced. The cladding of the undercarriage became increasingly smoother. All air flows used for brake and engine cooling are aerodynamically optimised, which results in a particularly efficient design.

In this area, Porsche focuses on state-of-the-art development tools. Simulations are initially used to test the effects of aerodynamically relevant designs on airflow through and around the vehicle. To optimise cooling requirements, the simulation also includes heat sources such as the engine, transmission, exhaust system and brakes. Aerodynamics engineers can also access a wind tunnel equipped with a highly accurate weight scale and a moving belt ground simulator. The weight scale permits exact measurement of how lift or downforce affect axle loads as a function of speed. The moving belt simulates the road and can run underneath the vehicle at speeds of up to 300 km/h to simulate the relative motion between the car and the road as realistically as possible.

The importance of aerodynamics continued to grow with increases in road performance and the brand’s standard for continual performance improvement. In the late 1980s, Porsche developed an extendable rear spoiler for the 964 to combine the indispensable effect of vehicle bypass flows with the demands on the typical Porsche design. This completed the first step towards adaptive aerodynamics.

The CO2 emission of the 918 Spyder is so minimal that it is exempted from the London Congestion Charge. When arriving at the red carpet, the exceptional car and its famous occupants both attracted a lot of attention from the waiting fans.
